QUOTES:
"FREAK storms battered southern Queensland for the fifth consecutive day
last night, killing a farmer, injuring two young students and leaving a
trail of devastation through the suburbs of Brisbane.

The storms came at the end of a week in which parts of Melbourne and
northern Tasmania were flooded and thousands of lightning strikes caused
havoc along the eastern seaboard.

At the Bureau of Meteorology's Severe Weather Centre in Sydney, forecaster
Kenn Batt said the wild weather was caused by a persistent trough of low
pressure extending from central Queensland to southern NSW and drawing in
warm, moist air from the northeast.

The Tasmanian town of St Helens recorded 235mm in the 72 hours to 9am
yesterday.

The Brisbane storms yesterday blacked out 40,000 houses after blacking out
60,000 the day before.

The damage bill will now far exceed the $7million estimated from the first
four nights.

Part of the Mater Private Hospital facade collapsed onto a shop awning in
South Brisbane, a tree blocked traffic on the Western Freeway and the roof
of a block of home units in inner suburban New Farm was blown off.

The weather bureau said a tornado had hit near Beenleigh, south of Brisbane.

Global Positioning and Tracking Systems network manager David Bland said
Australia registered about 10,500 lightning strokes per hour throughout
yesterday, mostly in southeast Queensland and off the NSW south coast.

The West Australian Bureau of Meteorology declared a category 1 cyclone,
Linda, off the Cocos Islands yesterday."
