[STORMREPORTS] Wonderful Weather!

From: Eric Greenberg (green99{at}pobox.com)
Date: Wed Jan 28 2004 - 09:47:59 EST

Greeting from the ice-encrusted regions of Central NJ. This storm started
Sunday night with light snow. Monday morning we had about 2" on the ground
and the snow abated for a good part of the day. Monday night, with the
temperature around 20F, we started to get freezing drizzle. The air aloft
was reported to be as high as 50F in layers!! With all of the salting and
sanding that had gone on here recently, the roads were surprisingly
good. My estimate is that about 1/8"-1/4" of ice accumulated on untreated
surfaces through Tuesday around Noon. We had about a 4 hour break and then
heavy sleet began falling at 4:30PM yesterday. We had Thunder-sleet in the
area, but not specifically at my location. Sleet continued moderate to
heavy until 9:00PM last night. Approximately 2.5" of sleet accumulated
everywhere. The at 9:00PM it changed over the snow when the winds aloft
shifted to the North from the Northeast. Ground temperature rose to
approximately 25F and started to fall again.

Overnight we received about 5" of snow on top of the 2.5" of sleet, and the
accumulations still on the ground from previous weather events over the
last three weeks. We have only been above freezing for three hours since
January 9th.

My snow blower has asked me for an early retirement, which I denied :-)

I hope the weather is a bit better by you, depending on your definition of
"better".

Eric

P.S. - Sorry for all of the "unofficial" information above but my primary
weather station has taken a break on me, and my dog managed to get in to my
snow measurement area.
