A lot of information has come to light about the storms this past weekend,
it looks like now there were several people struck by lightning over the
weekend.

MEDIA STORY WITH LIGHTNING PHOTO:

QUOTES:
"Bob Vanderveen and his son were watching the storm outside their home in
Camooweal Street when lightning struck the ground near them and lifted Mr
Vanderveen's son off the ground.

Senior meteorologist Geoff Callaghan said lightning strike is not uncommon
in Australia with approximately 5 to 10 deaths caused by lightning strikes
each year.

Hoping to see lightning hit the Mount Isa Mines' Stack could have ended in
disaster for a father and son who had a very close call with Mother Nature
earlier this week."

"KALEENA Matthews and Robyn Otley are lucky to be alive after a lightning
bolt struck their legs and exited through their feet at the weekend.

The freak accident happened about 5.30pm on Saturday - the same time
31-year-old David Evans was killed by a lightning strike while playing
cricket at Bomaderry.

The two women and Mr Evans were among five people struck by lightning at
Nowra on Saturday.

In a baffling act of mother nature, the lightning, which came from a
thunderstorm over Cambewarra Mountain, struck the Bomaderry Oval and a
Worrigee horse paddock, where the two women had just got out of their car,
almost simultaneously.

Even more mysterious was the lack of storm activity at Worrigee and Bomaderry.

Mrs Matthews recalled light rain and "thunder rumbling in the background"
at Worrigee.

"But we didn't see any electrical activity before we were hit," Mrs
Matthews said.

On average 10 people are killed by lightning each year, University of
Wollongong associate professor Ted Bryant said.

"Historically lightning strikes were once the largest natural cause of
death in Australia," Mr Bryant said.

"But now when it comes to mother nature that (statistic) has been taken
over by fishermen swept off rocks by waves.""

"The EnergyAustralia graph was created over 12 hours last weekend to
pinpoint the location of 44,580 lightning strikes recorded around NSW.

The data, which was logged between midday on Saturday and midday Sunday,
reveals that electrical strikes were visible from the South Coast across to
the Hunter region in the north of the state.

During this period, a bolt of lightning claimed the life of David Evans,
31, who was playing cricket in Bomaderry when he was hit at 5.30pm on
Saturday.

The electrical strike shattered his bat and left a hole in the ground next
to where Mr Evans was standing.

It also knocked over at least half-a-dozen of Mr Evans' teammates.

In two separate incidents, a Gosford man who was sailing on the Central
Coast and a 52-year-old Queensland man were also injured after being struck
by lightning over the stormy weekend.

Although the increased electrical activity is not unusual for this time of
year, Alec Brown of EnergyAustralia said people were probably taking more
notice of it because the past two summers had been so dry."

"A Gosford man is recovering in hospital after the dinghy in which he was
sailing was struck by lightning, throwing him into the air.

Chris Meech, aged in his 40s, was returning to Gosford Sailing Club on
Brisbane Waters on the NSW central coast after 2pm (AEDT) on Saturday, when
lightning hit his four-metre Laser dinghy, a spokesman said.

He is the third lightning victim in NSW in under a week."
