"ST. MATTHEWS -- "It's a mess. It looks like a tornado with ice came
through. Even telephone poles snapped."
That's Calhoun County Emergency Services Director Bill Minikiewicz's
assessment of his community in the aftermath of the devastating ice storm
that he said, at its peak, left 70 percent of the county's population
without electricity. Late Tuesday Minikiewicz estimated that about 50
percent were still without power.
"Our Emergency Operations Center was without power for more than 24 hours,
but we've got power now," he said.
The law enforcement radio system in Calhoun County has been down for 24
hours and is still operating on a back-up system, and the county's fire
communications are being powered by an emergency generator, Minikiewicz said.
He said he was told it could be three to four days before all power could
be restored in the county.
Even the Calhoun County Courthouse and Annex were without power Tuesday,
causing the county government to shut down. Minikiewicz said he was hopeful
the government offices would be able to reopen Wednesday.
"Many, many roads in the county are impassable due to downed trees,"
Minikiewicz said, adding that personnel from Calhoun County, St. Matthews
and SCDOT were making a special effort to get the roads open to the housing
complexes in the area to make sure that fire and other emergency workers
could get through to residents of the complexes if needed."
