Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, set a new record low early Sunday. The
low of 19 degrees below zero bested the old mark by one degree.
Peterborough, only 70 miles from Toronto, dipped 29 degrees below
zero.
Torrential rains late this week have inundated northwestern
Borneo, a big island shared by Malaysia and Indonesia. Kuching, in
the Malaysian state of Sarawak, registered a staggering, three-day
rainfall of 25.7 inches, and as of early Monday morning, local time,
rain was still thundering down.
Saturday into Sunday, heavy rains pounded the foot of the Serra
do Mar near the shores of southern Brazil. Rainfall within 24 hours
was 11.7 inches at Paranagua in the southern state of Parana.
Yet another outburst of torrential rain was observed in northern
Madagascar. On Nosy Be, a near-shore island, rainfall was 11.8
inches within four days.
Heavy "sea-effect" snows triggered by an arctic cold blast this
week buried the island of Ullung Do, South Korea. Its setting in the
Sea of Japan put it right in the path of a "snow machine" that saw
snowfall rise to nearly 40 inches as of Sunday morning. This was
bulwarked by a 20-inch outburst over the weekend.
