January 24, 2004 4:13 p.m.

Northwestern Indonesia, Malaysia and even Singapore have seen
locally-excessive rainfall since midweek. In Malaysia's Sarawak state
on the island of Borneo, Kuching within four days had about 17 inches of
rain; of this, 9 inches fell within 12 hours ended early Saturday.
Batan, a small Indonesian island near Singapore, picked up 8.5 inches
of rain within 36 hours ended late Saturday. Singapore registered 4.2
inches within 24 hours, and rain was still falling heavily as of
Saturday evening.

Heavy, windswept rains off the Mediterranean Sea have swamped the
Levant, or borderland from Syria to Israel. In Syria, two days of
cold, thundery rain as of early Saturday left rainfall of 5.7 inches.
In mountainous Lebanon, rainfall may have exceeded 8 inches over the
two days, and the upper slopes undoubtedly saw deep snows. Haifa, in
northern Israel, collected 4.3 inches of rain from the series of
cloudbursts.

Anadyr, Russia, Saturday was walloped by fearsome winds in a
blizzard. This Bering Sea port in the district of Chukotka Saturday
sent a weather observation showing 80-mph steady winds, 90-mph gusts
and whiteouts in blowing snow.

The island of Ullung Do, South Korea, has been blanketed with
deep, "sea-effect" snows this week. Its setting in the Sea of Japan
east of the peninsula has afforded it heavy bursts of convective snow
driven by this week's arctic cold blast into East Asia. Saturday
evening, snow lay 27 inches deep owing to snow accumulated since the
first of the week.

Maputo, capital of Mozambique, had two-day rainfall of 6.4 inches
as of early Saturday. To the south, Durban, South Africa has 4.45
inches in a little over 24 hours.

Snow is once again blanketing the hills of southern Italy. At
Campobasso, a two-day snowstorm left snow 13 inches deep as of
Saturday morning. Snow even fell in Rome for a time on Friday.

Heavy rain and strong winds lashed parts of southern Chile on
Friday night. At Islotes Evangelista, sustained winds were 75 mph
with heavy rain.

Northern Spain was hit by heavy rainfall Friday and Friday night.
At San Sebastian, rainfall was three and a half inches by daybreak
Saturday, local time.

Calgary, Alberta, Canada is having an exceptionally warm January.
In a place where average daytime highs are in the lower 20s, the
temperature has climbed above freezing every day since January 7.
Indeed, many days have seen highs in the 40s, even the lower 50s.
