"ISTANBUL : Turkish rescue services struggled to rescue thousands of
drivers trapped in their cars as snow and freezing temperatures created
deadly conditions and cut transportation for a second day across much of
Turkey, officials said.

Authorities shut down the key maritime route linking the Black Sea to the
Mediterranean via the Bosphorus because strong winds and snowfall severely
restricted visibility.

Many roads were blocked, including the motorway linking Istanbul to Greece
and Bulgaria, and dozens of flights in and out of Istanbul were cancelled
or delayed.

Schools and universities in Istanbul, along with the stock exchange, were
closed.

Television reports said some 4,000 motorists were trapped in and around
Istanbul. Many had run out of fuel after leaving their motors running
overnight to stay warm.

Istanbul and several other cities also suffered electrical power cuts.
Millions of homes here were without electricity for part of Thursday, and
the city's governor Muammer Guler described the traffic jams caused by the
blizzard as "historic".

"This is an extraordinary situation," Guler said on NTV television, urging
people to leave their cars at home on Friday because the weatherwas
expected worsen.

"Conditions are similar to those of a disaster," he said.

Authorities in Istanbul recorded more than 500 traffic accidents, with at
least two deaths. "
