"VLADIVOSTOK, January 22 (Itar-Tass) - A violent cyclone, which lasted for
twenty-four hours, hit Russia's Maritime Territory (Far East) on Wednesday.
It ended only last night. Fortunately, there were no major accidents or
serious damages. The cyclone did not affect the work of local electric
power stations. Their power dispatching service reported no serious damages
on the electric transmission lines.
Thanks to timely storm warnings, all the rescue services of the southern
part of the Territory were alerted and the population was readied for the
impending cyclone. However, the number of traffic accidents had doubled due
to slippery roads.
Wind velocity reached twenty-five metres a second and there was heavy
snowfall. Lessons were suspended at schools on January 21 and 22 due to
horrible weather. Air temperature dropped down to 17-25 below zero and the
northern wind gained strength.
While the population of Maritime Territory are recovering from the shock,
their Kamchatka neighbours are getting ready for the oncoming natural
calamity... [more]
A storm warning was also broadcast on Sakhalin on Thursday... [more]"
