"Oklahoma set a new record Wednesday.

B.J. Pope. director of Creek County Emergency Management, said Wednesday
was the 250th day without a tornado in Oklahoma.
"I guess you could say we are in a tornado drought," he said.

The old record was set in 1990 when tornados did not touch down in the
state for 248 days.

National Weather Service spokeswoman Keli Tarp also said a record was
established nationally on Jan. 16 for the fourth longest run of days
without a tornado. That record - 50 days - started Nov. 27 and ended when a
twister was recorded near Abilene, Texas.

Meteorologist Richard Smith said it's difficult to identify a single cause
of the tornado-less weather.

"Tornadoes and the thunderstorms that spawn them are very small-scale
features, and are born out of processes that involve a lot of factors,"
said Smith. "The bottom line is that the weather pattern that affected
Oklahoma over the past several months did not produce the combination of
ingredients needed for tornadoes to form."

Meteorologist Daniel McCarthy said the pattern over the country since
October has been dominated by a low pressure trough over the eastern United
States.

"This has brought very cold air across this region southward toward the
Gulf of Mexico inhibiting southerly flow favorable for thunderstorms across
the central and southeast U.S.," McCarthy said.

The longest recorded run nationally without a twister is 52 days from Dec.
12, 1985 to Feb. 1, 1986.

The previous record for the state was 248 days that began on July 16, 1990
and ended with the Ada tornado outbreak of March 21, 1991.

Tarp also says that 2003 was only the second year since 1950 that there
were no confirmed Oklahoma tornadoes in the month of June and the first
year that there were no tornadoes from June through December.

Smith says there's nothing to indicate a change in the tornado drought pattern.

"From all indications, it appears the weather pattern will remain fairly
quiet for some time to come, so the tornado-less period is likely to
continue for a while longer."
