Rainfall was unusually heavy this midweek in northern India with
some places receiving more rain than would normally fall in all of
January. In Patiala, for example, rainfall was nearly 1.8 inches
Wednesday through Thursday whereas January's mean rainfall is 1.7
inches. Showers and thunderstorms, meanwhile, left 1.3 inches of rain
on Lucknow versus the monthly average of about 0.9 of an inch.
Thursday's high of 16 degrees in Moscow was right on target for
this time of the year, but the average temperature in the Russian
capital was more than 15 degrees above the mean from January 10th
through Wednesday.
A change to sharply colder weather turned rain into heavy snow in
parts of western Japan Wednesday. On the island of Honshu, heavy snow
left a liquid equivalent of 2.2 inches within 24 hours as of Thursday
night, local time. About midway through this snowstorm, which was due
in part to cold winds blowing from the Asian mainland across the Sea
of Japan, snowfall was 10 inches; the final tally was undoubtedly
much higher.
A strong storm system moved out of the Mediterranean Sea into
western Turkey Thursday. This system brought windswept rain and snow
to a large part of Greece and Turkey. Some rainfall totals across
Turkey include: Mugla, 3.64 inches; Qanakkale, 2.91 inches; Antalya,
1.57 inches; Bursa, 1.46 inches. Bandirma had 1.77 inches of rain
before a changeover to snow coated the ground with 2 inches of
accumulation. Just under 2 inches of rain fell in Balikesir before a
changeover to snow left an inch of accumulation on the ground with
more on the way. Istanbul, Turkey even got in on some of the wintry
weather as rain changed to heavy snow as temperatures dropped to near
freezing and winds were sustained near 30 mph. In addition to the rain
and snow, strong winds accompanied this storm system. Strong northerly
winds in excess of 60 mph blew across the southern islands of Greece.
Although temperatures were several degrees lower across western
Australia Thursday, it was still extremely hot. Marble Bar in
northwestern Australia topped off at 110 degrees. Even Roebourne, near
the coast of northwestern Australia reached a scorching 110 degrees.
Bitterly cold arctic air continued to maintain a firm grip across
northern and eastern Canada Thursday. Overnight lows bottomed out at
41 degrees below zero at Rankin Inlet on the western side of Hudson
Bay in Nunavut while Coral Harbour bottomed out at 39 degrees below
zero. Meanwhile, southwestern portions of Canada continue to average
a good 15-25 degrees above normal.
