As of late Sunday afternoon, EST, Lupit is a weakening typhoon
over the northern Philippine Sea south of mainland Japan. With top
sustained winds down to 80 mph, Lupit is centered 235 miles northwest
of Iwo Jima, one of Japan's Volcano Islands. The typhoon is moving
briskly towards to the northeast at 28 mph. Lupit is forecast to
accelerate on a northeastward heading, weaken and to become an
extra-tropical cyclone during the next 24-48 hours. On this course,
Lupit would unleash strong, damaging winds and heavy rainfall on the
Bonin and Volcano islands as well as some of the Izu Islands. The
storm's swift motion would limit the duration of this severe weather,
however.
The passage of a cold front instigated flooding rains in parts of
northern Honduras late last week and during the weekend. Greater La
Ceiba, a city on the Caribbean coast, was hit by a staggering amount
of rain -- 23.2 inches within 48 hours as of midafternoon Sunday.
Scattered cloudbursts have hit Malaysia and Indonesia in recent
days. One particularly rainy spot has been Tarakan, Indonesia. This
city on the island of Borneo collected 9.1 inches of rain within 48
hours ended midday Sunday, local time.
The cold has been even harsher than usual lately in Siberia's Pole
of Cold. At Oymyakon, Sunday's low was 63 degrees below zero
registering it as the ninth consecutive day to dip 60 or more degrees
below zero. The average low during this spell has ranged from minus-43
degrees to minus-47. Saturday and Sunday each registered a high of
minus-56 degrees or about 15 degrees lower than average.
