Typhoon Lupit is a weakening, but still very dangerous storm over
the northern Philippine Sea. As of late Saturday afternoon, EST,
Lupit's highest sustained winds are down to about 110 mph. Centered
430 miles southeast of Naha, Okinawa, Japan, and 635 miles
west-southwest of Iwo Jima, one of Japan's Volcano Islands, the
typhoon is moving northeastward at 9 mph. Lupit is forecast to
continue to weaken on a northeastward heading for the two days while
passing south of mainland Japan. The Izu, Bonin and Volcano islands
are all threatened by this large storm.

Soaking rains have swept over southern Japan in recent days. On
the Kii Peninsula on southern Honshu, the town of Owase was drenched
by 15.5 inches of rain within 60 hours as of late Saturday evening,
local time. Of this total, 14.9 inches came during the last 36 hours.
Murotomisaki, Shikoku, meantime, collected 10.0 inches of rain over
the same 60-hour span.

Cloudbursts unloaded 5.8 inches on rain upon Kuantan, Malaysia,
within 24 hours ended Saturday morning, local time.

A potent storm system lifting northeastward across central
Europe brought a good deal of rain and even some snow to much of
central into southeast Europe Friday into Saturday. Rain and snow
reached as far north as southern Poland. Rainfall amounts from
Austria to Yugoslavia were 0.50 to 1.00 inch with nearly 1.50
inches at Niksic, Yugoslavia. Snow has begun to wind down over
the Austrian Alps as of Saturday morning, but not before dumping
a foot of snow in 24 hours at Sonnblick. This fresh snow brought their
snow depth to around 6.5 feet. The storm will continue to move
eastward Saturday bringing more rain and snow to eastern Europe.

Koolan Island in northwest Australia reached a high of 105
degrees on Saturday. This reading marked at least their third
consecutive day where the high was 105 degrees or higher.
