As of midday Friday afternoon, Super Typhoon Lupit still had maximum
sustained winds of 160 mph with gusts up to 195 mph. The eye of
Lupit is currently 39 miles in diameter and is centered about
540 miles south-southeast of Okinawa. Lupit continues to move
off to the northwest at 10 mph. Lupit is not expected to
strengthen further. In fact it will probably weaken over the
next couple of days as it begins to turn more to the north and then northeast.
Lupit is expected to miss Japan but will probably affect parts
of the Izu Islands in a weakened state.
A potent storm system churning across the Ligurian Sea
Friday has brought a good deal of rain and even some
thunderstorms to southeastern France, Italy and northward into
central parts of Europe. Heavy snow fell Thursday night across
the Alps and will continue through the day Friday, winding down
during the evening hours as the storm moves eastward. Rainfall
amounts across southeastern France into northern and central
parts of Italy have averaged in the 0.50-1.50 inch range with
locally higher amounts.
A cold front blasted through Veracruz, Mexico Friday
morning with wind gusts near 60 mph.
