Typhoon Lupit is a big, powerful and dangerous storm pulling away
from the western Caroline Islands. Late Tuesday afternoon, EST, the
eye of Lupit is over the southeastern Philippine Sea 235 miles
northwest of Yap, Federated States of Micronesia. Highest sustained
winds about the eye of this sprawling typhoon are nearly 140 mph; it
is heading towards the west-northwest at 8 mph. Lupit is forecast to
stick to its northwesterly tack over the next two to three days. This
would leave Typhoon -- possibly Super Typhoon -- Lupit over open seas,
at least for the time being.
Islands nearest the path of Lupit late Monday and early Tuesday,
local time, were Fais and the Ulithi Atoll. Farther from the storm's
path, Yap picked up nearly six inches of rain, and Tuesday's squalls
hit 50 to 55 mph.
A severe wind storm that shook East Greenland early this week
lingered into Tuesday at Ikermit. Indeed, the interval having
sustained winds of at least 45 mph reached 48 hours. One 12-hour
stretch Monday into Monday night saw steady off-shore winds of about
70 mph.
A staggering outpouring of rain hit southern Honshu, Japan,
Monday into Tuesday. Along the southeastern side of the Kii
Peninsula, the town of Owase was drenched with 16.6 inches of rain
within 24 hours.
Pekoa, in Vanuatu, picked up 8.5 inches of rain within 24 hours
as of Tuesday.
Thundery downpours pelted western Panama late Monday. Cloudbursts
unleashed 5.4 inches of rain within six hours on the town of David.
Two-day rainfall ended early Monday evening was 7.3 inches.
