Late Monday afternoon, EST, the core of Typhoon Lupit is over the
western North Pacific Ocean about 145 miles east-northeast of Yap,
Federated States of Micronesia. Highest sustained winds about the
strong storm are about 115 mph; Lupit is heading towards the northwest
at 15 mph. Fais and Ulithi Atoll are islands nearest the likely path
of Lupit within the next 12 hours. The powerful storm is forecast to
track towards the northwest thereby entering the open Philippine Sea
by midweek.
The midcontinent of South America sweltered Sunday. In northern
Argentina, Santiago del Estero topped out at 112 degrees. Farther
north, 110 degrees was reached at Las Lomitas, and also in nearby
Paraguay at Prats-Gil.
High winds racked East Greenland Sunday and Monday. At Ikermit,
an automated weather station clocked steady winds of at least 70 mph
for several hours on Monday. Ikermiuarssuk observed sustained winds
above 60 mph for a few hours.
Record temperature extremes both low and high were challenged
Sunday into Monday in Canada. To the east, it was the high side of
the spectrum that was in play, as much of southern Ontario warmed to
between 60 and 65 degrees. Wiarton, near Lake Huron, warmed to 62
degrees Sunday, then dipped no lower than 57 degrees overnight. This
made for a daily mean of about 25 degrees above average. London and
Toronto both dawned within striking range of their respective record
highs. Well off to the west, meantime, arctic air flooded Canada's
middle. In Saskatchewan, the low of 19 degrees below zero at Estevan
tied a new low for the date.
Southern Honshu, Japan, was the target of locally excessive
rainfall Monday. At Owase, 5.9 inches of rain poured down within 12
hours.
