A tropical storm gaining strength over the western North Pacific
Ocean near the eastern Caroline Islands has been given a name, Lupit.
As of late Friday afternoon, EST, Tropical Storm Lupit is about 230
miles east-northeast of Chuuk and 260 miles west-northwest of Pohnpei
Island. The storm is now moving westward at 16 mph with highest
sustained winds of 50 mph. Lupit is forecast to track towards the west
and to strengthen markedly for the next two to three days. The central
Caroline Islands and southernmost Marianas are at risk of having
severe weather during this time.
Thursday and early Friday, a blizzard swept north-central Canada.
In northern Manitoba, winds blew 30-50 mph raising whiteouts of snow
and blowing snow as temperatures slid through the teens. Farther
north, the worst of the storm hit Thursday at Baker Lake, Nunavut.
Blinding whiteouts, 55-mph gusts and single-digit temperatures
highlighted this storm; wind chills were at times below minus-25.
Winds at Godthab, Greenland, surged to at least 60 mph early
Friday morning. Gusts may have topped hurricane strength. It was
slightly above freezing, warm enough to rain and drizzle.
Some soaking rains hit southwesternmost Russia this week. Sites
along the Black Sea were the rainiest. Here, Tuapse was drenched by
6.1 inches of rain within two-and-a-half days ended midday Friday,
local time. Of this tally, 4.1 inches came from thundery downpours
lasting six hours on Thursday. The mean November rainfall at Tuapse is
5.6 inches. At Adler, another seaside town and also right on the
border with Georgia, three-day rainfall ended late Friday evening was
3.1 inches.
