outback of Queensland and some neighboring lands of Australia
Wednesday. Windorah, Queensland, read about 115 degrees at mid
afternoon. Longreach topped out at 111 degrees.
The tropical depression that had been Typhoon Nepartak is now
inland over the southern mainland of China. Late Wednesday morning,
EST, Nepartak is located about 60 miles northeast of Beihai, whence
it is heading towards the northeast at 10 mph. Nepartak will now
dissipate quickly. Early this week, Nepartak did pack a punch as it
skimmed western Hainan Island, China. First a typhoon, and later a
tropical storm, Nepartak struck the city of Dongfang with gales and
rainfall of 9.0 inches. Farther from the storm's track, rainfall
elsewhere on Hainan was 10.6 inches at Sanya, and 8.8 inches at
Qionghai.
Re-born Tropical Cyclone Beni continues to ply the open South
Indian Ocean. Late Wednesday afternoon, EST, Beni is about 360 miles
south of Diego Garcia, British Indian Ocean Territory. Beni holds
highest sustained winds of 75 mph while tracking west-southwestwards
at 5 mph. Beni is forecast to head generally towards the west over the
next few days on a path that would be of no immediate threat to land.
A new tropical depression is gathering strength over the western
North Pacific Ocean. Late Wednesday afternoon, EST, this depression
is centered within 60 miles to the southeast of Ujelang Atoll and 255

mph, the depression has highest sustained winds of almost 30 mph.
This cyclone is forecast to strengthen meaningfully during the next
several days on a largely westward path that would skirt the Caroline
Islands to the north. Intensification to tropical storm status was
seen by Thursday afternoon, and there is potential for this weather
maker to become a typhoon over the upcoming weekend.

Biting cold gripped northwestern Canada from the Yukon to the
western Northwest Territories Wednesday. In Yukon Territory, for
example, Dawson plummeted 45 degrees below zero Wednesday morning,
then struggled to reach the upper minus-30s by midafternoon. An
average day at this time of the year here would have a low of minus-7
and a high of 7, so these marks were 30-40 degrees lower than the
daily mean. Other cold spots in Yukon included the towns of Faro and
Old Crow which dropped to minus-37 degrees and Haines Junction which
set a low of minus-35. Low temperatures 15-30 degrees below zero were
registered northward and westward from Great Bear Lake in Northwest
Territories.
Meanwhile, southern British Columbia, Canada, has weathered a bout
of excessive rains in recent days. In the 72 hours ended late

inches at Agassiz and 4.4 inches in Abbotsford; all three sites are on
the mainland east of the city of Vancouver. On southern Vancouver
