Winchester VA

Sorry it's taken so long to post the information below, as I've been
busy with other tasks.

There has been a spate of wild record swings, including tornados (Nov
5th), near records both high & low, & some of the strongest winds so far
this year.

In late October thru the first several days on this month, near record
warmth griped thw Mid Atlantic. About 8 records were noted in VA, WV, &
MD in the time period.

Monday Nov 3rd was the warmest, & my local temp of 82º tied the daily
record. Temps between Oct 31 & Nov 4th averaged a low of 53.4 and a high
of 75.6. That is 17º above normals that time of year.

=====

On Nov 6th a sharp cold front brought a rare dose of strong
thunderstorms here. That line later produced confirmed tornados in
Loudoun Co VA & Montgomery Co MD. (Both suburbs of Washington DC (40
miles west & 20 miles NW, respectively.)

=======

On Nov 9th the low fell to 26, well above the dail record. The next
moring, it fell to 23.7, or about 2º above the daily record.
=======

On Nov 13th, some of of the strongest winds so far this year cuased by a
deepening pressure gradient. Widespread winds in the 40mph range were
noted.

In fact, I searched the AWS sites (mainly schools) and found all with
PWGs (Peak Wind Gusts) above 40mph in the 25 stations within 40miles of
nw VA).

Locally, I measured a 44mph PWG. Other local stations also measured
PWG's in the mid 40s mph. WINC radio measured a 53mph PWG. Winchester
Regional Airport also reported a PWG of 53mph. Between 10am & 3:40pm,
sustained winds averaged 30mph or better, w/ frequent gusts over 40mph.
However local media said the airport reported a PWG of "just over
60mph". The AWOS station typically reports 3 times a hour.

Other PWG's over 50mph in the region Nov 13th:

60 Musselman HS, Inwood WV
56 Lessburg-Godfrey Apt, Leesburg VA
55 Harpers Ferry HS, Harpers Ferry WV
55 Valley View HS, Martinsburg WV
53 Capon Bridge ES, Capon Bridge WV
52 Valley View HS, Jefferson MD
51 Fresta Valley MS, Marshal VA
51 Rappahannock Co HS, Washington VA
50 John W Tolbert ES, Leesburg VA

News Reports said that aproximately 115,000 were without power at 11pm
Thursday in the Washington area. Another report for my area (also
serving several counties north toward PA of 15,000 dark at 11pm. About
11,000 were dark locally at the peak of the outages.

I momentary lost power several times, in each instance causing the
"flashing clock syndrome".

I finished last Tuesday on leaf cleanup. The bags were picked up by the
city Wednesday, & were gone before the gale the next day.

My aunt had raked her leaves curbside in anticipation of being vacumned
before the winds arrived. But wet weather delayed that, & the leaves
blew back into her yard. The city does not offer the vacumn service
where I live, And if it did, I doubt I would use it, for the reason just
noted. With 12 trees, I gathered 2 dozen paper bags & 12 canfulls of
yard waste this season. The city will make mulch out of it.

A note for Webtv (MSN tv) users:
In the last several years, we could not access the Premium Accu Weather
site. (Upon using the un/pw login we would get popup that said to the
affect of "information msntv can not use". Recently, AccuWeather changed
the un/pw login to a website based system. We can now access most of
features of AW Premium. Of course, some of largest loops still cause
problems, but I found the new login much better that the previos
versions.

=======

Severe weather is possible in the Mid Atlantic Wednesday. The SPC had a
15% chance locally & 25% chance over SE VA & eastern MD. Isolated
tornados are possible, but the main threats are very heavy rain &
damaging straight line winds.

The NWS offices have issued flash flood watches for the NW half of VA.
At least 1" of rain is forecast, with the chance of locally 3". Over the
WV & MD mnts, QPF's of 1.5 to 4" are noted. There is the chance of
mainstream river flooding in a few days.

Automated weather warnings for VA are posted at
