Nepartak is now a tropical storm after having clipped the island
of Hainan, China. Late Tuesday afternoon, EST, Nepartak is centered
about 65 miles north-northwest of the city of Dongfang on the western
shore of Hainan. Nepartak is drifting towards the north at 5 or 6 mph
with highest sustained winds of 55 to 60 mph. This storm is forecast
to weaken further, first over the Gulf of Tonkin, then in about 24
hours, to land in the China mainland or perhaps nearby Vietnam. On
Hainan, meantime, Nepartak did unleash some torrential rains. Sanya,
at the southern tip, picked up 10.6 inches of rain within 48 hours.
During the same time, rainfall was 8.8 inches at Qionghai and 7.8
inches in Dongfang.
Tropical Cyclone Beni continues to churn the open South Indian
Ocean. Late Tuesday afternoon, EST, Beni is about 295 miles
south-southeast of Diego Garcia, British Indian Ocean Territory. The
re-born storm holds top sustained winds above 60 mph as it plies its
way towards the west at 6 mph. Beni is forecast to maintain its
westward heading with little change in strength during the next two
days; no land is threatened.
An alert has been raised for a potential tropical depression over
the western North Pacific Ocean near the eastern Caroline Islands. The
disturbance is question is about 430 miles east-northeast of the
island of Pohnpei as of midafternoon Tuesday; it is moving
southwestward at 13 mph.
Some South Pacific islands were hit by downpours early this week.
Pago Pago, island of Tutuila, American Samoa, collected 5.3 inches of
rain within 12 hours Monday. To the west and on the other side of the
International Date Line, thundery cloudbursts left 4.8 inches of rain
in only 6 hours Monday at Funafuti, Tuvalu.
Monday was unusually mild in most of the British Isles, but
especially so in parts of eastern Scotland. Warmed by westerly winds
blowing down the Scottish Highlands, the seaside city of Aberdeen rose
to 62 degrees, far surpassing the mean daily high of 47.
Recent mornings have been chilly in the nation of Kuwait. Kuwait
City, which is set right on the shores of the northwestern Persian
Gulf, dipped to 45 degrees Tuesday morning after falling to 43 early
Monday. The average low at this time of the year is about 57 degrees.
Russia's side of the Bering Sea, the district of Chukotka,
weathered a harsh blizzard on Tuesday. At Anadyr, the storm lashed out
with gusts of 75 to 85 mph and blinding whiteouts. Temperatures
climbed from the teens to the upper 20s.
A spring storm of unusual strength whipped the plains of eastern
Argentina early Tuesday. On the fertile Pampas south of Buenos Aires,
steady winds of 40 to 50 mph drove soaking, cool rains in sheets.
Rainfall topped 3 inches at Las Flores, yielding more than the mean
monthly rainfall for November.
