Typhoon Nepartak is wedged between Vietnam and the island of
Hainan, China. Late Monday afternoon, EST, Nepartak is centered within
45 miles to the south of Hainan and 130 miles to the northeast of Hue,
Vietnam. Nepartak is drifting towards the north-northwest at 9 mph
packing highest sustained winds of 75 mph -- a minimal typhoon.
Forecasts were for Nepartak's center to thread the gap between Vietnam
and Hainan, thereby entering the Gulf of Tonkin. After 36 to 48 hours,
a landfall would be increasingly likely, either in northern Vietnam or
the far-southern mainland of China. The storm has already dropped 4.4
inches of rain upon Sanya, southern Hainan.
Tropical Cyclone Beni has come back to life over the open South
Indian Ocean. Beni holds top sustained winds near 35 mph as of late
Monday afternoon, EST. The cyclone is centered about 375 miles
southeast of Diego Garcia, British Indian Ocean Territory, and it is
moving westward at 6 mph. Earlier, the storm crossed its path from
late last week. Beni is not seen to be a threat to any land.
Heavy, thundery rains pelted parts of eastern Honduras late last
week and during the weekend. Set on the large coastal lagoon called
Caratasca, the town of Puerto Lempira received more than its fair
share of rain. Within 72 hours to early Sunday evening, rainfall was
8.5 inches.
Unusually heavy rains for November doused central Chile this past
weekend. At Concepcion, for example, rainfall was 2.6 inches versus
the monthly mean of 1.8 inches. Other rainy spots included Valdivia
and Temuco with rainfalls of 2.7 and 2.1 inches, respectively.
Sunday, the heat was on across the midcontinent of South America.
As is often true, the locus of the highest temperatures was on the
scrubby, flat Chaco. Argentina observed 105 degrees at Las Lomitas,
but also along the foot of the Andes at Oran. Across the line in
southern Bolivia, Villamontes registered at least 106 degrees. Much of
Paraguay sweltered at 100 to 105 degrees including 104-degree highs at
Base-5, Concepcion and Prats-Gil.
In the heart of the Australian outback, the desert of southern
Northern Territory got a thorough soaking Sunday and Monday. Yulara,
site of Uluru -- the famous Ayers Rock -- had more than 3.5 inches of
rain within 36 hours. This accounted for more than one-third of the
average yearly rainfall.
As of Monday, rainfall within three days was 5.0 inches at Oviedo
in northern Spain. Parts of southern France got in on this soggy
weather -- Montpellier collected 6.0 inches of rain during the
weekend with most this coming on Sunday.
Agana Naval Air Station, Guam, was doused with 5.2 inches of
rain Sunday to Monday.
