Typhoon Nepartak continues to churn the South China Sea, just
south of Hainan Island. As of Sunday evening, EST, Nepartak was
centered near 15.9 north and 110.7 east, which was about 170 miles
east of Da Nang, Vietnam. Nepartak was heading west-northwest at 13
mph with highest sustained winds of 85 mph. The typhoon is expected to
pass just to the south of Hainan, then head through the southern end of
the Gulf of Tonkin and make landfall in northern Vietnam, most likely
between Vinh and Hanoi. The storm will weaken greatly after landfall
as it continues into southern China.
The latest Antarctic blizzard blew through Casey and into Mawson
over the weekend. Both stations were rocked by sustained winds of
70-76 mph with temperatures in the teens and visibility reduced to
zero by blowing snow.
The islands ringing the northeastern Caribbean were hit by heavy
rain and flooding this past week, also. While these rains have mostly
abated, a downpour of nearly 3.5 inches hit Le Raizet, Guadeloup in
the northern Lesser Antilles late Saturday.
A storm over southwestern Europe is dropping heavy rain on parts
of France and Spain. About 3.5 inches fell on Oviedo, Spain from
late Saturday through midday Sunday, local time. The same storm
reached south into northwestern Africa, bringing 1-2 inches of rain
to parts of northern Morocco while raising dust and sand storms in
parts of Algeria. Tindouf, Algeria had visibility lowered to about a
quarter of a mile of a mile by blowing dust as winds mounted to 50 mph.
Agana Naval Air Station, Guam, was doused with over 5 inches of
rain this weekend.
