[STORMREPORTS] AccuWeather World Weather Highlights Thursday, Oct 30

October 30, 2003 6:07 p.m.

Typhoon Parma, having closed off a perfect loop in its open-ocean
path, is now weakening somewhat over the North Pacific Ocean. Late
Thursday afternoon, EST, the eye of Parma is 910 miles northwest of
Wake Island. Highest sustained winds have slipped to 100 mph, and
Parma is now speeding towards the east-northeast at 30 mph. Parma is
forecast to weaken steadily over the next few days; along its path
towards the east-northeast, it will eventually cross the International
Date Line. No land is anywhere near the forecast path of Parma.

A tropical storm has taken shape east of the Philippines. Late
Thursday afternoon, EST, Tropical Storm Melor is located over the
Philippine Sea about 355 miles east of Manila, Philippines. Highest
sustained winds about this storm are 40 mph as it moves towards the
northwest at 14 mph. It is forecast to head towards the northwest for
next 24-36 hours, perhaps crossing northern Luzon Island later Friday
to Saturday.

Kythira, Greece, near the southern tip of the mainland, had
rainfall of 5.3 inches in about six hours on Thursday.

Calgary, along with most of Alberta, Canada, had by far its
coldest morning of the fall thus far on Thursday. The 12-degree chill
was bolstered by a fresh snow cover of two inches. Yet the month thus
far has been warmer than average by more than six degrees. For
Edmonton, the story was much the same: October's coldest start over
the season's first snowfall following anomalous warmth.

Strong, long-track southerly winds have warmed Atlantic Canada
this week. The Island of Newfoundland was especially warm compared to
average as of early Thursday. Daniel's Harbour dawned with 71
degrees, or about 25 degrees above the mean high. Saint John's saw
the temperature hover near 65 degrees throughout the night. The low
of 64 degrees was almost 30 degrees above average, and was more than
15 degrees above the mean daily high. Dew points, a measure of
humidity, were at or above 60 degrees over much of the island,
thereby confirming the tropical origins of the wind stream. On the
Labrador mainland northwest of the mainland, Wabush Lake was hit with
heavy snow that gave way to rain early Thursday. Fresh snowfall was
11 inches before the switch to sleet, ice and last, rain; water
equivalent was 1.7 inches.

On Thursday, a powerful North Atlantic storm dove southeastward to
the west of the British Isles. A buoy about 450 miles west-northwest
of Shannon, Ireland, clocked sustained winds at nearly 100 mph early
in the day. A short time later, waves were cresting at almost 30 feet.

Locally excessive rains doused the Malay Peninsula this midweek.
In Songkhla, Thailand, 7.6 inches of rain was collected within 30
hours to Thursday afternoon, local time.
