Cold, thundery rain and soft hail chilled Dublin, Ireland,
Tuesday night and Wednesday. In all, it was good for water equivalent
of 2.1 inches, or more than the mean rainfall for the first three
weeks of October.
Powerful Typhoon Ketsana is still churning the open Philippine
Sea. Late Wednesday afternoon, EDT, Ketsana is 730 miles southwest of
Iwo Jima, Japan. Highest sustained winds have dipped to about 130 mph.
The storm is moving sluggishly towards the northeast at 5 mph. Ketsana
is pegged to drift slowly towards the northeast as a weakening typhoon
for about the next two days, and later, to gain in speed towards the
northeast. Ketsana is of no immediate threat to any land.
Parma has gained typhoon strength over the western North Pacific
Ocean. Late Wednesday afternoon, EDT, Typhoon Parma is 440 miles east
of Iwo Jima, one of Japan's Volcano Islands. Parma is moving towards
the northeast at 10 mph with highest sustained winds of 75 mph.
Forecast to head towards the northeast, Parma will almost surely
remain an open-water storm.
A tropical depression has taken shape in the South China Sea west
of the southern Philippines. As of late Wednesday afternoon, EDT, this
depression is centered 330 miles southwest of Manila, Philippines,
with maximum sustained winds a little shy of 30 mph. This eastward
drifting low is not seen as becoming a named tropical storm, but it
may drift over northern parts of the island of Palawan within the next
two or three days. Meantime, on the Spratly island named Song Tu Tay,
Vietnamese observers registered six-hour rainfall of 5.0 inches late
Wednesday, and 7.1 within two days.
Over the eastern North Pacific Ocean, Patricia has lost hurricane
status. Late Wednesday afternoon, EDT, Tropical Storm Patricia owns
maximum sustained winds of 65 mph. Located about 540 miles
south-southwest of Manzanillo, Mexico, Patricia is moving towards the
west at 12 mph. Patricia is forecast to head towards the northwest
over open waters for at least the next two to three days with little
change in strength expected.
The small, low-lying island of Tho Chu, Vietnam, had 17.7 inches
of rain in the four days ended Wednesday evening, local time. The
island lies in the Gulf of Thailand where, as of Wednesday, a
tropical wave showed potential for becoming a depression.
Yet another day has seen record-challenging warmth spread over
western Canada. Tuesday, highs were 75 to 85 degrees from the foot of
the southern Alberta Rocky Mountains to the southeastern corner of
Saskatchewan, which is 20 to 30 degrees above mean. At least one
record high was set at a major city: Calgary warmed to 76 degrees.
It's been hot lately in northwestern Mexico. In the state of Baja
California, the town of San Felipe, which is set on the northern coast
of the Gulf of California, registered highs of 106, 108 and 108
degrees, respectively, on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. As of
midafternoon Wednesday, local time, the temperature has reached 100
degrees again. On the Pacific coast where moderating onshore winds are
the norm, Tijuana heated to 97 degrees Tuesday and 93 degrees
Wednesday.
Highly abnormal downpours have dampened the far west of Algeria
early this week. Through late Wednesday, local time, rainfall had
accumulated about 2.6 inches at Tindouf. This site in the Sahara
desert receives, on average, about 0.4 of an inch of rainfall in
October and has a mean yearly rainfall of less than 2 inches.
