On Tuesday, after a balmy low in the 50's, temperatures soared into the
mid & upper 70's in the Mid Atlantic. This was a tease of the record heat
that has gripped the western US this week. A gusty SW breeze
accompanied the warmth along w/ partly sunny skies that gave way to
mostly cloudy skies after 5pm. The low was 55, rising to 75.6 in the
afternoon. My peak wind gust was 19mph.
Overnight the cooler air crept in slowly, but remained the 50's early
today. It took until 9am for the low to fall to 47º. The skies
remained mostly cloudy Wednesday, and the temperatures struggle to
recover. The temperature only reached about 52º this afternoon, or
24º colder than 24 hours ago.
Scattered showers left amounts well under .10" today. I had .02" from am
rain showers. In some areas, the NWS received reports of pea size hail &
stray lightning bolts. As the colder air gets entrenched for Thursday,
lingering moisture would change to snow. We have a 20% of rain/snow
showers tonight.
There is the slight chance of snow showers throughout the mid Atlantic
mountains tonight. In some cases, the chance continues Thursday.
Generally, accumulation is not forecast. Garrett Co (the western most
high in the Alleghenies) may get a dusting. In a few counties near
Bluefield WV, any snow would bring up to 2", mostly on western ridges.
The area is west of Roanoke VA & SSW of Charleston WV near the WV/VA
border.

HUGE sunspot
For those keep who keep track, there is a huge sunspot on the sun's
surface. Large sunspots tend to create CME's (coronal mass ejections).
When the CME's are Earth directed, they sometimes cause auroras & radio
outages. More details at http://www.spaceweather.com/ .
