A snowstorm this week has buried the city of Aldan, Russia, which
lies at the heart of an important gold-mining area. Through late
Thursday evening, local time, the storm left snowfall with a liquid
equivalent of 1.9 inches. Actual snowfall was probably near 2 feet,
though the latest observation, taken early Thursday morning, showed a
snow depth of 17 inches.

A strong atmospheric ridge yielded summery heat over much of
middle South America on Wednesday, though calendars show it to be
early spring in the southern hemisphere. With respect to average,
central and northern Argentina were hottest. Here, midafternoon
temperatures in the 90s were nearly widespread. Isolated instances of
100-degree heat were registered too, including at the city of Tucuman.
Highs in the 90s were notched as far south as the northern shores of
the Golfo San Matias where San Antonio Oeste and Viedma were 90 and 91
degrees, respectively as of midafternoon; these readings were 20-25
degrees above average.

Soaking showers and thunderstorms hit the far south of Italy
Tuesday night and Wednesday. Marina di Ginosa collected 3.5 inches of
rain within 24 hours. Other rainy standouts were Capo Palinuro and
Catania, Sicily, with 12-hour rainfalls of 1.9 an 1.8 inches,
respectively.

On the Japanese island of Oshima, 24-hour rainfall ended early
Wednesday, local time, was 3.9 inches. Oshima is located about 70
miles south of Tokyo.

Tropical downpours unleashed nearly 4 inches of rain in just 6
hours Tuesday at David/Enrique Malek, Panama. This moisture was
associated with a strong tropical wave moving across Central America.
This feature will continue to bring locally heavy rain to parts of
Central America in the next couple of days. An area of low pressure
was along the tropical wave and may develop into the next eastern
Pacific tropical storm.

A cold front plunged all the way into Indochina Monday night and
Tuesday. The front triggered heavy thunderstorms at Vinh, Vietnam,
unleashing 3.75 inches of rain. The front also brought marked cooling
to the region. After unusual warmth with highs in the lower 90s
Saturday, Sunday and Monday, Tuesday's high temperature at Vinh was
only 74 degrees. By Wednesday, the front had stalled across
south-central Vietnam. Very heavy rain was occurring in Nha
Trang, where 3.34 inches fell. Meanwhile, Truong Sa, part of the
Spratly Islands in the South China Sea, has had over 4.5 inches of
rain since Monday.
