This is very much the case here in Central Pennsylvania as well.

For example, compare yesterday's weather cam image at my place:

to the day before:

Here's an article about the damage in NC:

"Strong winds damage leaves, colorful views

High winds Tuesday brought down some of the mountain's bright leaves and
with them the hopes of some fall color watchers.

"It's kind of killed the fall, and I'm sorry to say it," said Tom Sanders,
a member of the Carolina Mountain Club who recently hiked 470 miles through
Western North Carolina. He said the fall color would still be worth looking
at for the next 10 days, but it won't compare to some of the autumn color
he has seen.

Gusts of up to 49 mph were reported in Watauga County. At nearby
Grandfather Mountain, the wind blew almost all the leaves off trees at high
elevations, according to its daily color report.

The wind also knocked down trees and power lines throughout the region.
Progress Energy reported that about 4,700 customers lost power early
Wednesday morning. More than half of them lost power for less than an hour,
spokeswoman Nancy Thompson said."
