A Sate of Emergency has been declared in Maine by Governor John
Baldacci.
(Portland-AP) A Central Maine Power spokesman says more than 63,000
customers are in the dark. More than 5,500 customers of Bangor Hydro
Have no electricity either. Thousands of homes and businesses are
without power today because of a storm that swept across the state
with strong winds. John Carroll of CMP says the major problem was tree
limbs heavy with leaves being knocked down by the wind and rain. The
National Weather Service office in Gray lost power but backup
generators kept computers and other equipment going. Another problem
area was downtown Freeport. Several poles came down, knocking out
power to merchants including L.L. Bean. Meteorologist Steve Capriola
says the storm was expected to bring an inch or more of rain to much
of Maine. And he said the wind gusts could top 50 miles per hour,
especially along the coast.
