From: admin{at}weathermatrix.net
Date: Sun Sep 28 2003 - 10:40:01 EDT

September 28, 2003 10:23 a.m.

Sunday, strong Tropical Storm Koppu rocked the northern Volcano
Islands over the western Pacific Ocean south of mainland Japan.
Before daybreak, EDT, Koppu is located 90 miles west-northwest of
Iwo Jima, and within about 30 miles of Kita Jima, most northerly of
the Volcanoes. Koppu is also 660 miles south of Tokyo. Packing
highest sustained winds of nearly 70 mph, Koppu is heading towards
the north-northeast at 9 mph. The only other land in the likely path
of Koppu, the nearby Bonin Islands, will feel the wrath of Koppu
within 10-15 hours; thereafter, Koppu will accelerate towards a
conversion to a mid-latitude storm over the North Pacific Ocean.

Saturday night to Sunday night, local time, wind gusts of
55-65 mph were clocked on the island of Iwo Jima as Tropical Storm
passed nearby.

Thursday to Saturday, high winds, likely gravity-induced
"katabatic" winds, blasted Minna Bluff, where an automated weather
station is set near the head of the Ross Ice Shelf. Winds blew
steadily at 45 to 65 mph most of the time as temperatures hovered in
the minus-teens. There was at least one burst of hurricane-strength
wind. In light of the temperature and wind, the wind chill dipped 50
to 60 degrees below zero.

Spring just started a few days ago in the Southern Hemisphere, but
summerlike heat was already felt in parts of northern Argentina
Saturday. Oran in the far north, not far from the border with Bolivia,
hit 101 degrees Saturday afternoon and farther south, Santiago del
Estero, rose to 98. Meantime, a strong cold front surged northwards:
Cordoba was 84 degrees at midday Saturday, but the front blasted
through in the early afternoon with wind gusts better than 50 mph and
a temperature drop of 30 degrees in just 2 hours. The front triggered
wind gusts of 40 to 45 mph in Buenos Aires.

Sunday, a strong storm dumped 4.4 inches of rain upon New
Plymouth on the western North Island. Gales lashed much of island.

Sunday, early snows chilled higher ground in the vast, dry land of
Sinkiang, or Xinjiang, in the far-west of China. The main regional
city, Urumqi, had rainfall of 1.5 inches with rain turning to snow
before ending. The mean high this time of year is between 65 and 70
degrees.
