Friday night, Tropical Storm Koppu blossomed quickly from a broad,
strong tropical depression over the North Pacific Ocean south of
Japan. Early Saturday morning, EDT, the middle of Koppu is 170 miles
southwest of Iwo Jima, one of Japan's Volcano Islands. This is also
nearly 900 miles south of Tokyo. Its winds now nearing 70 mph, Koppu
is heading towards the northeast at 14 mph. Koppu is forecast to pass
nearest Iwo Jima, likely as a typhoon, early Sunday, local time, then
the small Bonin Islands soon thereafter. Later, the forecast path
would take Koppu northeastwards and away from any land.
Soaking rains swept over central coastal Vietnam this midweek, and
there were further downpours on Friday. In Hue, rainfall rose to 10.2
inches within 72 hours whereas an even 9 inches swamped Da Nang.
A storm with hurricane gusts lashed western Greenland on Friday.
Winds gusted 80 to 90 mph along with slashing downpours at Godthab, or
Nuuk, the capital of Greenland.
Thursday to early Saturday, high winds, likely gravity-induced
"katabatic" winds, blasted Minna Bluff, where an automated weather
station is set near the head of the Ross Ice Shelf. Winds blew
steadily at 45 to 65 mph most of the time as temperatures hovered in
the minus-teens. There was at least one burst of hurricane-strength
wind. In light of the temperature and wind, the wind chill dipped 50
to 60 degrees below zero.
