Winchester (nw) VA

A major flash flood occurred in the foothills of the Blue Ridge
mountains Tuesday about 45 miles west of Washington DC (and just 25
miles east of me). (It took me a few days of free time to gather info &
pics of the event, so that why this report is a few days late).

A cold front was forecast to dump 1 to locally 2" of rain regionwide
Monday afteroon thru early Tuesday. However local amounts in the eastern
Blue Ridge foothills got 4-7", much of it a few hours time. The ground,
already waterloogged, rejected it all.

The Goose Creek is western Loudoun Co VA's primary waterway. Typically,
it's a feet deep. Bankful is 10 feet, and it crested Mon evening about
22 feet. The only other floods that deep in the last several decades
were:
30.59' with Agnes on 6-22-72 and
25.74' on Oct 9th 1976.

The Monocacy River runs from the PA border south to the Potomac, and the
crest Tue evening did not fall in the top 5. But it's flooding did cause
moderate flooding there as well.

Dozens of people needed to rescued from cars & homes, most by boat. A
pregnant women 10 days overdue was flown to a hospital by a copter.

Frederick Co MD reported 37 water rescues, including 5 in fast moving
conditions. That county logged 80 closed roads.

Loudoun Co VA reported 90 calls for service, mostly flooded basements.
Seven were rescued from homes, mostly in the Oakland section of the
county. There 24 roads reported closed.

Other than the vivid images of flooding, the biggest news from the flood
was the sinkhole. Before it was filled, it measured 35 feet deep, 110
feet long, & 55 feet wide. I have enclosed several angles of the "Great
Frederick Sinkhole" in the album.

And here in Winchester, i measured only .96" for the event. We lucked
out again.
