Tropical Depression Marty has come to a halt near the northern
end of Gulf of California. Early Wednesday morning, EDT, Marty's
center is over the Gulf of California about 40 miles south of Puerto
Penasco, Sonora, Mexico, with highest sustained winds of 35 mph.
Marty is seen dissipating at the head of the Gulf within 12 to 24
hours. The last act of this dying former hurricane was a burst of
heavy rain over the Desierto de Altar between the Gulf and the
Arizona border. Earlier, locally-excessive rains had pelted the
eastern side of Baja California and the lowlands and foothills of
western Sonora.
Though calendars showed it to be the first day of autumn, Tuesday
would have been a warm day even by midsummer standards in parts of
central and eastern Europe. Highs in the 80s were common from eastern
Poland and Slovakia to Belarus, western Ukraine and the Balkan
Peninsula. The 80-degree high in Minsk, Belarus, was far above the
average high of 59. Kiev, Ukraine, also reached 80 degrees whereas an
average day near the autumnal equinox would have a high in the lower
60s. Topping the list of warm spots in Ukraine was Ivano-Frankivs'k
where 88 degrees was notched. In Serbia, the 90-degree mark was
breached at Sombor and there were top many readings in the upper 80s.
The atmosphere is prime for the birth of a new tropical cyclone
over the western North Pacific Ocean. As of late Tuesday, EDT, the
area of unsettled weather is located about 375 miles west-northwest of
Guam.
