Tropical Storm Marty is skirting the eastern shores of Baja
California, Mexico, following its landfall as a hurricane near the
southern end the the peninsula. Early Tuesday morning, EDT, Marty is
over the Gulf of California within about 25 miles of Punta San
Francisquito, Mexico. Owning highest sustained winds above 50 mph,
Marty is heading towards the northwest at 14 mph. Marty is forecast
to follow the Gulf to its northern end before landing Wednesday
afternoon or evening west of Puerto Penasco, Sonora. Along the way,
Marty will threaten excessive, flooding rains both to the west and to
the east of its path.
Eastern shores of southern Baja California were drenched by
Mary's cloudbursts and raked by its hurricane gusts. Rainfall at
Loreto was 5.9 inches, and that at La Paz, 3.6 inches.
Abnormally warm weather persisted over the heart of Europe Monday
and parts of the southeast were downright hot. In Germany, Karlsruhe
headed a lengthy list of sites rising into the 80s. The 87-degree top
mark here was about 22 degrees above average. Greater Berlin reached
85 degrees -- a full 20 degrees above the daily mean high. Vienna,
Austria, spiked to 87 degrees, and so did Bratislava, the Slovakian
capital. Highs in the 80s were widespread from Hungary to western
Ukraine and the Balkan Peninsula with most of the peak readings well
above average. In Serbia, the high was 92 degrees at Sombor and 90 in
Loznica.
Heavy, thundery rainfall of 7.4 inches washed Montpellier in
southern France on Monday. Mean monthly rainfall in September is 3.9
inches.
