[STORMREPORTS] Tornados in NJ?

From: Eric Greenberg (green99{at}optonline.net)
Date: Tue Sep 23 2003 - 14:38:12 EDT

A strong line of thunderstorms came through Eastern PA and NJ this
morning. While I was watching the radar, I thought I saw a comma shape
forming as the sky was darkening quickly. About a minute later my weather
alert radio went off with a tornado warning. These are EXTREMELY rare in
my part of the world. Everyone scrambled at my job, but all we really had
was about 1.5" of rain in about 45 minutes, with almost no wind and only
one lightning strike that was visible.

Several area close to my location reported severe damage including roofs
blown away, trees and power out for 35,000 people.

On my way home I surveyed some of the damage myself. I will be willing to
bet that an F2 (or higher) touched down in Ewing Township, in the vicinity
of N. Olden Ave., and basically ran up the road to about the Artic Parkway.

Lawrence Township also sustained major damage, but that damage looked to me
like straight-line wind damage and not tornado damage.

Luckily, my home was spared anything also, but the 11 miles between my work
and home got the brunt of it.

Eric
