[STORMREPORTS] AccuWeather World Weather Highlights Monday, Sep 22

Date: Mon Sep 22 2003 - 10:40:00 EDT

September 22, 2003 10:18 a.m.

Typhoon Choi-Wan slipped past southeastern Japan on Sunday before
heading over open Pacific waters. Before daybreak Monday, EDT, the
core of Choi-Wan is almost 400 miles east-southeast of Tokyo packing
highest sustained winds above 95 mph. Choi-Wan is sweeping towards
the northeast at nearly 30 mph. Now over cooler seas, Choi-Wan is
bound to quickly shift its characteristics to temperate from tropical
while headed further over open seas.

In its brush with southeastern Japan Saturday to Monday, Choi-Wan
dumped more than 10 inches of rain upon Hachijo Jima, one of the Izu
Islands stretching southward from near Tokyo. As the typhoon's eye
grazed Hachijo Jima, highest sustained winds of nearly 70 mph were
observed, and there likely were 100-mph gusts. On the mainland east
of Tokyo, gales of 50-55 mph lashed Choshi as rainfall reached 6
inches. Tokyo itself weathered winds of 40-50 mph at times, and
two-day rainfall was 4.3 inches. A factor in the stormy weather over
southeastern Japan was that a cold front passed on Saturday, and
moisture streaming from the typhoon over-ran the front thereby boosted
rainfall. The tightened pressure gradient strengthened winds between
southeastern Japan and the storm.

Hurricane Marty is bearing down on southern Baja California,
Mexico. Before daybreak Monday, EDT, the core of Marty is within 50
miles southeast of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, where it holds highest
sustained winds of 95-100 mph. Marty will cross the rugged southern
end of Baja California on Monday, then it will return to sea over the
Gulf of California. Later, a landfall on the Mexico mainland in
southern Sonora is foreseen.

Very warm weather continued over the weekend across portions of
Europe. For the 5th straight day Sunday, Paris, France was above 80
degrees with a high of 86 degrees. This is compared to an average high
for the day of 66 degrees. Karlsrhue, Germany topped out at 87
degrees versus an average high of 62. Warsaw, Poland rose to 83
degrees and Milan/Linate, Italy hit 88 degrees. Warsaw's average high
temperature is 65 and Milan's is 72. The highest temperature in
Europe Sunday was at Mont-de-Marsan, France, which hit 91 degrees.

A strong storm lashed Iceland Saturday night into Sunday. While
rainfall was not extremely heavy, winds gusted to nearly 60 mph at
Reykjavik and better than 65 mph at Keflavik and Vestmannaeyjar.
