Typhoon Choi-Wan passed to the south of Japan on Sunday. The
storm was far enough to the south of Japan's main islands to spare
them its damaging winds. Still, very heavy rain was falling over many
areas, including Tokyo. By Sunday evening, local time, over four
inches of rain had fallen in association with Choi-Wan. At that time,
the typhoon, packing top sustained winds of 110 mph, was still well
to the southwest of Tokyo, and a lot more rain was expected. Choi-Wan
was accelerating toward the east-northeast, and could bring
tropical-storm force winds to the Tokyo area. By Monday, the storm
was expected to weaken quickly while becoming extratropical.

Choi-Wan buffeted Okinawa as it gained typhoon status Friday.
Rainfall was about 4 inches in the city of Naha, and the Kadena
military base clocked gusts of 65-75 mph in strong squalls. Saturday,
the storm's core, or eye, passed right over Naze on the island of
Amani O Shima. Squalls with 80-mph gusts were followed within 3 hours
by a near calm. Rainfall was 7.2 inches. Also Saturday, winds gusted
50-60 mph on Tanega Shima.

Marty strengthened Sunday and became a hurricane about 285 miles
to the south of the southern tip of Baja California, Mexico. The
storm was drifting toward the north-northwest at 3 mph, and was
expected to take a more eastward turn. Later Monday or Tuesday, the
storm could reach the southern Baja, bringing damaging winds and
torrential rain. Some strengthening was also forecast as the storm
approaches land. Later in the week, what's left of Marty could bring
some rain to the southwestern U.S.

Abnormally warm, even hot, weather spread across Europe from
France to Poland on Friday. Paris' high of 87 degrees was about 20
degrees above average, and top marks in the middle and upper 80s were
widespread across the rest of France. In Germany, highs in the 80s
were also set widely with the 89-degree reading at Karlsruhe at the
head of the list. Warsaw, Poland, hit 82 degrees versus an average
high of 65.

Cloudbursts brought 4.25 inches of rain to Xiamen, China in just
6 hours Saturday. Zhangping, China, also had downpours Saturday with
4.14 inches in a little over 6 hours.
