Saturday, Typhoon Choi-Wan spun off southwestern Japan following a
direct hit upon some of the Ryukyu Islands. Early in the morning,
EDT, Choi-Wan is some 80 miles south-southeast of Tanega Shima, one of
the northern Ryukyu Islands, and 180 miles south-southeast of
Kagoshima, on the mainland island of Kyushu. The storm is heading
towards the east-northeast at 9 mph with highest sustained winds of
80 mph. Choi-Wan is forecast skirt the southern and southeastern
mainland through the weekend, and after brushing the shore near Tokyo
early Monday, local time, to head for the open Pacific Ocean.
Choi-Wan buffeted Okinawa as it gained typhoon status Friday.
Rainfall was about 4 inches in the city of Naha, and the Kadena
military base clocked gusts of 65-75 mph in strong squalls. Saturday,
the storm's core, or eye, passed right over Naze on the island of
Amani O Shima. Squalls with 80-mph gusts were followed within 3 hours
by a near calm. Rainfall was 7.2 inches. Also Saturday, winds gusted
50-60 mph on Tanega Shima.
Tropical Storm Marty is gathering strength over eastern Pacific
Ocean off Mexico. Early Saturday morning, EDT, Marty is centered 225
miles west-southwest of Manzanillo, Mexico. Highest sustained winds are
50 mph, and Marty is drifting lazily towards the west-northwest at 3 mph.
Marty is forecast to strengthen steadily to become a hurricane within
24 to 36 hours, and also to head mostly towards the northwest. Along
the way, Marty may brush Mexico's Isla Socorro, an open-ocean island.
The remnants of Hurricane Isabel rapidly passed over southeastern
Ontario, Canada, unloading modestly heavy rainfall and strong, gusty
winds. At the southern end of Lake Huron, Sarnia had been doused by
1.8 inches of rain by midafternoon Friday. By the same time, rainfall
was 1.1 inches at Hamilton and 1.0 inch at Waterloo. In Toronto, the
nation's largest city, the Pearson airport collected 1.2 inches of
rain and withstood wind gusts to 45 mph. At the Toronto waterfront,
gusts to 50 mph were clocked. Meantime, tropical warmth ahead of
Isabel surged far into northeastern Canada. South of the Ungava Bay,
Quebec, Kuujjuaq, reached 78 degrees even though the mean daily high
would be more like 45.
Ironically, a storm system crossing central Canada triggered even
heavier rains in a few instances in western Ontario and northern
Manitoba Thursday through midafternoon Friday. In Upsala, Ontario,
24-hour rainfall was 2.3 inches. Churchill, Manitoba, endured a cold
soaking rain -- rainfall was 2.4 inches within 36 hours as
temperatures hovered in the upper 30s and lower 40s.
Abnormally warm, even hot, weather spread across Europe from
France to Poland on Friday. Paris' high of 87 degrees was about 20
degrees above average, and top marks in the middle and upper 80s were
widespread across the rest of France. In Germany, highs in the 80s
were also set widely with the 89-degree reading at Karlsruhe at the
head of the list. Warsaw, Poland, hit 82 degrees versus an average
high of 65.
