Tropical Storm Choi-Wan has hit the island of Okinawa, Japan.
Early Friday morning, EDT, Choi-Wan is less than 50 miles to the
east-northeast of Naha, Okinawa, Japan. The storm is heading towards
the north at 12 mph with highest sustained winds of more than 60 mph.
Choi-Wan is forecast to take a northeasterly turn within 24 hours,
and also to strengthen into a typhoon. Following this forecast path,
Choi-Wan could threaten greater Tokyo, Japan, with high winds and
excessive rains on Monday, local time. Choi-Wan dumped 3.4 inches of
rain upon Naha within 24 hours, and racked the Kadena military base
with wind gusts above 65 mph.
The latest eastern Pacific tropical storm is "Marty". Early
Friday morning, EDT, Tropical Storm Marty is about 225 miles
southwest of Manzanillo, Mexico. Highest winds are 40 mph, and Marty
is heading towards the west-northwest at 9 mph. Marty is forecast to
strengthen steadily to become a hurricane within 48 hours. During
this time span, the west-northwesterly bearing would bring the
storm's core near Isla Socorro, Mexico.
A blizzard raged through midweek along portions of the Adelie
Coast of East Antarctica. At France's Dumont d'Urville outpost, winds
blew steadily at 45 mph or higher for about 40 hours. At the height of
the storm, a span of about 20 hours, sustained winds were clocked at
60-80 mph. The high winds whipped around snow into blinding whiteouts.
Thursday was much warmer than average from most of France to the
Low Countries and Germany as highs in the 80s were widespread. Paris
reached 85 degrees versus an average high of 69. Mont-de-Marsan,
France, soared to 91 degrees. Brussels, Belgium, notched a high of 83
degrees, and Amsterdam, Netherlands, peaked at 80 whereas average
highs for the date are 68 and 63 degrees, respectively, in these two
capital cities. Berlin, Germany, was about 15 degrees above average in
reaching the lower 80s.
The island nation of Malta has been abnormally wet so far this
month. The rainfall of 9.7 inches thus far compares strikingly to the
mean monthly rainfall of 1.1 inches. Indeed, mean yearly rainfall is
20.4 inches.
Now that the rain-giving Southwest Monsoon is waning over South
Asia, it is time to reckon the season's rainfall across India.
Climatologists in India have rated this summer second-wettest within
100 years. Tops for rainfall is said to have been the year 1975.
