August 31, 2003 10:05 a.m.

While much of the United Kingdom endured unprecedented heat the
first half of August, the weather lately has been unusually chilly,
even cold, in parts of the nation. Saturday morning, for example,
dawned with temperatures in the upper 30s and lower 40s in many
locations away from the coasts and larger cities, especially from
England's Midlands to southern Scotland and Northern Ireland. Both
Glasgow, Scotland, and Belfast, Northern Ireland, dipped to 37
degrees or within 3 degrees of the average low during the depths of
winter. Southwestern Scotland also had lows of 38 and 39 degrees,
respectively, at Machrihanish and Prestwick.

Sunday, the southeastern Balkan Peninsula sweltered for a
second-straight day. Saturday, Nis and Leskovak, Serbia, reached 105
degrees. Bulgaria had 106 degrees at Veliko Tarnovo and Lovech, and
105 at Ruse. Turnu Severin, Romania, topped out with 101. Sunday, the
core of intense heat settled southward putting Greece in its focus.
Inland, 100-degree heat was widespread in the early afternoon --
Larisa reached at least 102 -- and even lee shores of the islands saw
100-degree readings. Southern Bulgaria also sweltered -- Svilengrad
hit 102 degrees.

Sunday, Typhoon Dujuan is over the Philippine Sea looming as a
threat to East Asia. Before daybreak, EDT, the eye of Dujuan is 575
miles east-southeast of Taipei, Taiwan. The typhoon packs highest
sustained winds of more than 100 mph whilst heading towards the
west-northwest at 17 mph. Forecast to hold a west-northwesterly
heading, the typhoon would begin to threaten Taiwan, especially the
southeast, beginning Monday night.

Sunday, Hurricane Jimena remains a strong, open-ocean storm, but
is being eyed by folks in Hawai'i. Well before daybreak, EDT, Jimena
is over the North Pacific Ocean 600 miles east-southeast of Hilo,
Hawai'i. Highest winds about the hurricane are 100-105 mph; Jimena
is tracking towards the west at 17 mph. Jimena is forecast to head
essentially west bound through at least the middle of next week. Its
nearest approach to Hawai'i -- it would be Ka Lae on the southern "Big
Island" -- is foreseen on the morning of Monday, local time.
