The latest typhoon is Dujuan which, as of early Saturday morning,
EDT, is over the open Philippine Sea more than 800 miles
east-northeast of Manila, Philippines. Dujuan is drifting towards the
northwest at 10 mph packing highest sustained winds of 85 mph. Dujuan
is forecast to turn more towards the west over the next two days
whilst remaining over open seas. The forecast path would have Dujuan
threatening Taiwan early next week.

Hurricane Jimena is churning the open North Pacific east of
Hawai'i. Early before daybreak Saturday, EDT, Jimena is about 1000
miles east-southeast of Hilo, Hawai'i, with top sustained winds of
more than 95 mph. Jimena, heading towards the west at 17 mph, is
forecast to take a westerly tack for the next few days. Taking such a
path, Jimena could pass near the island of Hawai'i on Monday.

The storm which brought cooler weather and scattered downpours to
southwestern Europe took some severe weather to the continent's
midsection Thursday to Friday. In Switzerland, rainfall was 3.6
inches at Locarno. In the Austrian Alps, heavy thunderstorms unloaded
3.8 inches of rain in only 12 hours Friday at Villacheralpe. Strong
winds raked parts of northern Italy Thursday to Friday. High in the
Apennines, Monte Cimone clocked sustained winds of 35-70 mph for at
least 36 hours. Even some seaside locations were ripped by fierce
winds. Capo Mele, along the Ligurian Sea, withstood winds of 40-60
mph on Friday. Wendelstein Mountain, far southern Germany, also dealt
with 50-mph winds.

Southwesterly Scirocco winds pulled blistering heat from the
northern Sahara and blow-torched southernmost Europe Friday and
Saturday. Friday, Capo Bellavista on the island of Sardinia, Italy,
hit 105 degrees. Palermo, Sicilia, registered 100. On the mainland,
Pescara observed 102 degrees. Meantime, much of Serbia reached 100
degrees or more including Beograd, or Belgrade, where the high was
100. Saturday, as of early afternoon, Sicilia led the way with 108
degrees at Catania, and 106 at nearby Sigonella. Foggia, on the
eastern "boot" of Italy saw 104 degrees. Serbia had 102 degrees at Nis
and Krusevac. Bulgaria withered at 106 degrees, both at Lovech and at
Veliko Tarnovo.

At Dome "C", East Antarctica, a low of at least 107 degrees below
zero was set late Friday, local time.

Mawson station, on the shores of East Antarctica, weathered winds
clocked at 70 to 85 steady mph for a 12-hour stretch Friday and
Friday night, local time. At the time, temperatures held in single
digits; blowing snow lofted blinding whiteouts.
