From: admin{at}weathermatrix.net
Date: Fri Aug 29 2003 - 10:40:00 EDT

August 29, 2003 9:53 a.m.

Friday, an as-yet unnamed tropical storm plied the open Philippine
Sea. As of early morning, EDT, the storm held top sustained winds of
40 mph about a center which was more than 900 miles east-northeast of
Manila, Philippines. The storm was drifting westwards at 5 mph. The
storm is forecast to head towards the west and northwest over open
seas for the next two to three days.

Tropical Storm Jimena has strengthened over the open, eastern
North Pacific Ocean. Early Friday morning, EDT, Jimena was about
1350 miles east-southeast of Hilo, Hawai'i, with top sustained winds
of 60 to 65 mph. Jimena, heading towards the west-northwest at 14
mph, was forecast to build in strength on a west-northwestward,
open-water path for the next day or two day; later, it was seen
becoming a hurricane bound towards the west. Ultimately, Jimena may
have something to say about the weather in Hawai'i.

Thursday dawned frosty in parts of central and northern Ontario,
Canada. In the east, Timmins registered a morning low of 31 degrees
whereas an average day in late August would dip to about 46. Nearby,
Nagagami dropped to 32 degrees and Kapuskasing fell to 33. In the
province's northwest, Big Trout Lake's 32-degree minimum was about 13
degrees below average.

Some strong thunderstorms hit France on Thursday unleashing
scattered torrential downpours and severe wind gusts. For example, a
nasty thunderstorm hit Lyon Thursday evening, local time; wind gusts
to about 60 mph were registered.

Welcome cooling overspread much of heat-weary Iberia Thursday
affording a welcome break and even some meaningful rain in the west
and north. In Spain, Madrid had its coolest daytime -- it reached 74
degrees -- in more than three months, or since the 26th of May, when
73 was registered. Since then, the average temperature has been a
substantial 4.6 degrees above the climatological mean. As for
rainfall, soakings were confined to the northwest, including 2.3
inches for the week at Vigo, Spain, and 2.1 inches at Porto, Portugal.

At Dome "C", East Antarctica, the temperature dipped at least 105
degrees below zero early Friday, local time, and again Friday evening.
Moreover, it was 100 or more degrees below zero for about 20-straight
hours.

Mawson station, on the shores of East Antarctica, weathered winds
clocked at more than 70 steady mph Friday evening, local time.
