As of early Thursday, Tropical Depression 14w formed in the
western Pacific near 17.4 degrees north and 137.1 degrees east,
or about 480 miles north of Yap Island, Micronesia. The system
was moving southwest at 12 mph with sustained winds of 35 mph and
is expected to strengthen, perhaps reaching tropical storm
strength by tomorrow. A continuation of the southwest track is
expected over the next 24 hours before turning more west, then
northwest by the weekend.
Wednesday, Ignacio finally dissipated astride the southern Baja
California Peninsula of Mexico. Along its path across the Mexican state
of Baja California Sur, Ignacio left a heavy mark: rainfall of 7.7
inches at Ciudad Constitucion was roughly two-fold the average yearly
rainfall. Loreto saw 5.5 inches of rain, or about one-year's worth of
rain. Such rains likely triggered the legendary "walls of water",
reclaiming desert arroyos in a flash, then almost as fast, sinking
into the sand.
A cluster of thunderstorms triggered by an upper-level
disturbance moved across northern Greece late Tuesday night
and Wednesday. At Kerkira, a pair of thunderstorms combined to
dump over 4 inches of rain within a 12-hour period.
A very strong storm for this time of year is spiraling off
the northwest coast of Spain continued to produce very rough seas
across the Bay of Biscay and along Spain's northwest coast on
Thursday. As of Thursday morning, the storm was generating waves
of 6-10 feet with swells to 15 feet from the southern coast of
Ireland southward to the northwest Spanish coast. This storm
will push into western Europe tonight with widespread rain, some
heavy, for much of northern Europe tonight into Saturday.
Early Wednesday morning, the Esperanza station near the tip of the
Antarctica Peninsula warmed to 48 degrees. The mean high temperature
this time of year -- late in the Southern winter -- is 23 to 24 degrees,
and even at the height of summer, it's only 37 to 38 degrees.
