We had a heck of a storm late this morning in State College, PA, home of
WeatherMatrix HQ. As usual, I didn't have any of my storm chasing
equipment with me, but a friend of mine took some digital video from our
location on the west side of town and I have asked him to give me a
copy. A severe thunderstorm warning was issued for our county for this
storm: http://www.weathermatrix.net/archive/severe/1649.html
The storm looked very severe on radar (70dbz, 2.5" hail) when it was about
50 miles west of us but as it descended the mountains to our west, it lost
10dbz and 2" worth of the hail.
However, as the storm was west of us, its core expanded to a VERY large
area of heavy rain, so much so that it got darker outside than I have EVER
seen it as the storm approached.

Here's a complete radar animation, I was positioned approximately at the
center of the picture:

It was really incredible, it looked like 9 o'clock at night. The street
lights all came on and the local folks were very wary of the storm. It
also had a LOT of lightning, with about 325 strikes detected in an 8-mile
radius of WeatherMatrix HQ (this area only received about half the
storm). Most of these strikes were within 20 minutes.

The thunder was constant and rolling. It appeared at first that its bark
was worse than its bite, as it was very ominous, but it passed my location
west of town with moderate winds, very heavy rain, a lot of lightning, but
little reported damage. However the following storm reports were received
by the National Weather Service:
1035 AM STATE COLLEGE PA 1.00 INCH HAIL
08/27/03 CENTRE ONE INCH HAIL FELL IN
DOWNTOWN STATE COLLEGE
1040 AM STATE COLLEGE PA WIND DAMAGE
08/27/03 CENTRE 7 TO 8 TREES BLOWN DOWN ON
BUSINESS ROUTE 322
