"The warnings come on the heels of severe afternoon thunderstorms that
rolled through Washington area, felling trees, downing power lines and
causing widespread power outages.
In Virginia, Dominion Virginia Power reports that there are least 50,000
customers are without power, with most of the outages in Alexandria and
Herndon. A spokesman says crews will be working throughout the night to
restore electricity. In the District and Maryland, about 79,000 Pepco
customers are in the dark. Officials say most of those outages are in
Montgomery County.
About 67,000 BGE customers are without power in Anne Arundel, Howard,
Carroll and Baltimore counties, with Anne Arundel having the most outages.
Prince George's County Fire and Rescue spokesman Chauncey Bowers says about
30,000 people are without power. Rescue crews are working to help people in
critical areas such as hospitals and nursing homes.
The Capital Beltway closed for about an hour after downed power lines
prompted lane closures in both directions in Greenbelt during this
afternoons storms, according to Maryland State Police. A state police
spokesman said the lines electrified the guardrails between the Greenbelt
Metro station and Kenilworth Avenue, but the situation was cleared up at
5:46 p.m. and the lanes were reopened. No injuries were reported."
