Monday, local time, Typhoon Krovanh stormed ashore in
northernmost Vietnam. Krovanh landed from the Gulf of Tonkin near the
China border, then tracked inland a bit north of Hanoi. Since then,
Krovanh has broke up over mountains of northern Vietnam and
southwestern China. Earlier, the typhoon had struck the Luichow
Peninsula and northern Hainan Island, China. But Krovanh first
made landfall in far-northeastern Luzon Island, Philippines, late
Friday, local time.
Tuesday, the small and ponderous Ignacio lost hurricane status,
yet stubbornly lingered off the southern Baja California Peninsula.
Early Tuesday morning, was still within 50 miles northwest of La Paz
packing highest sustained winds of nearly 70 mph. The storm drifted
lazily towards the northwest at only 2 mph. Landfall northwest of La
Paz was foreseen for daylight hours of Tuesday followed by a swift
break up over the peninsula's mountain spine.
Dry weather lingered over the Okanagon Valley of southern British
Columbia, where a fire that charred the area of Kelowna has reached
nearly 80 square miles in extent. It's been a long, dry and at times
hot summer, and barely more than 2 inches of rain has fallen at
Kelowna since the start of May.
Also beset by wildfire this summer, Portugal is reported to have
had five percent of its land -- and 10 percent of its woodland --
blackened by fire. This would be about 840,000 acres of forest, scrub
and farmland.
