BEIJING -- A typhoon roared into China today, flooding
a provincial capital with knee-deep water and causing
"a lot of injuries and damage," the government said.
Hours earlier, the storm injured at least five people
in Hong Kong.
The extent of the devastation was not immediately
clear. The official Xinhua News Agency said it had
received no reports of casualties as of tonight.
Typhoon Krovanh hit China's tropical island province
of Hainan with howling winds and heavy rains, cutting
electricity in parts of its capital, Haikou, Xinhua
said.
The typhoon, named after a Cambodian tree, landed at 4
a.m., Xinhua said, citing Hainan's meteorological
station.
