Typhoon Krovanh, marked by winds of 100-125 mph, headed through
the northern Gulf of Tonkin early Monday morning, EDT after passing
along the north coast of Hainan Island and the Luichow Peninsula
Sunday afternoon and Sunday night with fierce winds and flooding
rainfall. Tunchang, on Hainan, had nearly 9 inches of rainfall in 24
hours. Dongfang, on the island's west coast, had 6.29 inches. Nearly
275 miles to the north of the storm's center, Hong Kong, China, was
wracked by winds better than 55 mph in squalls Sunday. And, Yangjiang,
just to the south had about 3.5 inches of rain. Krovanh will end its
journey by making landfall very close to the northern Vietnam/
southern China border during the day Monday, EDT. There, it is
expected to weaken rapidly as it interacts with higher terrain.
Hurricane Ignacio was near 24.2 north, 109.9 west or about 40
miles to the east of La Paz, Mexico early Monday morning, EDT. The
storm had maximum sustained winds of 90 mph with gusts of 115 mph and
was drifting toward the northwest. Damaging winds as well as flooding
rainfall will affect portions of the southern Baja Peninsula.
Battering waves and a high storm surge will cause beach erosion and
flooding along the southeast coast of Baja California Sur. Areas
along the west coast of mainland Mexico, particularly Sinaloa, will
also experience rough winds, heavy rainfall and coastal flooding as
Ignacio tracks straight up the Gulf of California.
Tremendous rainfall was reported at Ahmadabad, India, this
weekend. In less than 24 hours, Sunday and Sunday night, local time,
almost 14 inches of rain fell.
Another area of heavy rain was reported across the Korean
Peninsula over the weekend. Seoul, South Korea, had 12-hour rainfall
of 6.18 inches Sunday, with a total of 10.06 inches both Saturday and
Sunday. Meanwhile, two-day rainfall in Cholwon totaled 12.45 inches.
Chunchon measured 6.14 inches. In North Korea, Singye, had 5.75
inches. The heaviest rain shifted south of Seoul Monday.
