"Kansas City, Mo., August 19 -- Thirsting for significant rain for more
than a month, northwest Missouri was placed in the Extreme Drought category
in the latest weekly U.S. Drought Monitor issued Aug. 14.

Just two weeks ago, northwest Missouri, much of Kansas and Nebraska and
western South Dakota were moved to D2 Severe Drought designation. The
Drought Monitor labels drought severity in five categories from D0
Abnormally Dry to D4 Exceptional Drought.

A combination of severe short-term dryness and persistent long-term
rainfall deficits resulted in the development of extreme D3 drought in
northwest Missouri. There are numerous reports of farm ponds and wells
going dry, as well as major crop losses in northwest Missouri. "
