Thursday, the Pearson International Airport at Toronto,
Ontario, tied a daily record high with 90 degrees.
Early Friday, winds gusted 55-60 mph on the eastern shores of
Hudson's Bay at Puvirnituq, Quebec.
As of Friday, Thakhek, Laos, had two-day rainfall of 6.6 inches.
A strong tropical wave unloaded scattered downpours among the
Lesser Antilles Wednesday and Thursday. On Martinique, one of the
Windward Islands, rainfall was 4.9 inches within 12 hours as of early
evening, Thursday, at Le Lamentin. Within two days, rainfall was 7.7
inches. Soon after reaching the waters of the eastern Caribbean Sea,
this tropical wave was upgraded to Tropical Depression Nine.
Thursday to Thursday night, local time, stormy weather beset
parts of New Zealand's North Island. In the far northwest, sustained
winds blew 40-60 mph at Cape Reinga. Winds just as strong were
clocked off the Taranaki Coast over the Maui petroleum field on
Platform A.
Friday, mid-day apparent temperature topped out near 140 degrees
at Al Manamah, Bahrain. High humidity from the hot sea waters of the
Arabian Gulf accentuated the 100-degree heat.
Friday, Typhoon Krovanh is striking northern Luzon Island,
Philippines, with hurricane winds and torrential rains. Before
daybreak, EDT, the eye of Krovanh is nearing northeastern Luzon some
40 miles east-northeast of Tuguegarao, Philippines. Highest sustained
winds are about 105 mph, and the storm is headed westwards at 17 mph.
Within about 12 hours of landfall, Krovanh, now significantly
weakened, will return to tropical waters of the South China Sea where
re-strengthening is foreseen. Bound towards the west and northwest,
Krovanh is forecast to become a threat to southern China west of Hong
Kong late on Sunday, local time.
