Withering heat baked Tunisia Monday. Indeed, it was hotter
overall than was Sunday. Early in the afternoon, Monastir, near the
Mediterranean Sea, registered 117 degrees. Farther south, Sfax hit
118. The heat wafted out to sea reaching nearby islands. Pantelleria,
Italy, reached 102 degrees, and Luqa, Malta, 100. Tarabulus
(Tripoli), Libya, had 115 early-afternoon degrees.
Sunday, there was a high of 101 at Gourdon, France. Sigonella,
Italy, on the island of Sicily, reached 106 degrees.
Lately, China has had plentiful rains. At Zhumadian, on the
southern North China Plain, rainfall beginning early Sunday was 6.3
inches. Far to the south, tropical Qinzhou had rainfall of 13.9
inches beginning Friday.
Tompo, in the Sakha Republic of far-northeastern Russia, observed
rainfall of 4.8 inches Monday.
