Presque Isle, Maine- Severe thunderstorms pummled Northern Maine and Western
New Brunswick Friday evening as a cold front approached from the west. A
severe thunderstorm watch was issued for both areas early in the afternoon
to alert residents of the possibility of severe weather, which occured later
in the day.

Storms developed in the Western portion of the state around 3 pm EDT and
triggered the first round of Severe Thunderstorm warnings. The main threat
with these storms was strong, damaging winds. As the storms marched across
the Pine Tree state, they took more of a northeast track, sparing southern
regions of central Maine and western New Brunswick.

The northeast section of Aroostook County was hardest hit, with strong winds
estimated at over 60 mph in some locales. Damage included a small plane at
the Caribou Municipal Airport which was anchored to the ground being flipped
over, RV trailers overturned, and countless trees being blown on to area
roads. Power outages and damage to utility equiptment was also reported.

After reeking havoc in northern Maine, the cluster of severe storms crossed
the border into Canada. Damage to property in northwestern New Brunswick is
unknown at the current time.

The clean up continues at this hour, as the area recovers from the first
severe weather outbreak of the season.
